For manufacturers, chat should help visitors reach the right person or information without pretending an automated assistant can make engineering or safety decisions.
Use a chatbot for low-risk triage
A chatbot can answer approved questions about opening hours, locations, basic capabilities and enquiry routing. It can also collect structured details before passing a technical RFQ to sales or engineering.
Use live chat where judgement matters
Human chat is better for nuanced specifications, unusual applications, commercial negotiation and conversations where an incorrect answer could materially affect a project.
Set hard boundaries
- Do not let a general chatbot approve specifications or tolerances.
- Do not generate safety, compliance or maintenance advice from an unverified source.
- Do not invent stock, capacity, lead times or pricing.
- Escalate technical uncertainty to the appropriate person.
- Keep chat data collection proportionate and controlled.
A hybrid setup often works best: automation handles repetitive triage while people handle technical and commercial complexity. See our manufacturing AI automation guide for the wider control framework.
