There is no useful “average” retail or FMCG marketing budget. A sensible budget depends on gross margin, repeat-purchase behaviour, distribution model, seasonality, stock availability and whether the objective is ecommerce revenue, retail sell-through, wholesale growth or brand demand.
Build the budget from commercial economics
- Average order value or wholesale order value
- Gross margin after fulfilment and promotions
- New-customer acquisition cost
- Repeat-purchase rate and customer lifetime value
- Channel contribution by SEO, paid media, marketplaces, email and retail partners
Budget by bottleneck
If product discovery is weak, invest in SEO, feeds and category architecture. If traffic is healthy but conversion is poor, prioritise merchandising, product pages and checkout. If acquisition is expensive, improve retention and CRM before simply increasing media spend.
