Google Ads Budget for Automotive: 2026 UK Guide

A practical 2026 guide to setting an automotive Google Ads budget using CPC, conversion rate, lead quality, vehicle margin, inventory and sales attribution.

There is no useful universal answer to “how much should an automotive business spend on Google Ads?” A franchised dealer group, independent used-car retailer, service centre, leasing company and specialist automotive brand all have different margins, search demand, stock positions and conversion paths.

The right Google Ads budget for automotive starts with commercial maths: what outcome you want, what that outcome is worth, how efficiently your website converts relevant traffic and how much qualified search demand exists in the locations you serve.

This guide focuses on UK automotive advertisers. For the wider acquisition model, see our automotive marketing services, Google Ads management and automotive marketing cost guide.

What affects automotive advertising cost?

Automotive advertising cost depends on the searches you target, location, competition, vehicle or service margin, website conversion rate and how narrowly campaigns are structured. A dealership paying for high-intent vehicle or finance searches will have different economics from a workshop promoting MOTs or servicing, so the useful number is cost per qualified enquiry, appointment or sale rather than a generic industry average.

Start with the outcome, not the monthly spend

A click is not the commercial result. Before setting a budget, define the conversion you actually want Google Ads to produce. Depending on the business, that might be:

  • a qualified vehicle enquiry;
  • a booked test drive;
  • a finance enquiry that meets your criteria;
  • a service or MOT booking;
  • a parts or accessory sale;
  • a fleet or business enquiry;
  • a completed sale that can be attributed back to the campaign.

Do not treat every form fill as equally valuable. A generic “contact us” submission, a duplicate lead and a buyer ready to book a test drive should not carry the same weight in reporting or optimisation.

The automotive Google Ads budget formula

A simple planning model is:

Estimated media spend = target qualified conversions ÷ expected website conversion rate × expected cost per click

The formula is simple. The quality of the inputs is what matters. Use current Google Keyword Planner data, your existing account history, CRM outcomes and actual landing-page conversion rates wherever possible. If you do not have reliable historical data, use a conservative test assumption and replace it with real numbers as soon as the campaign generates enough evidence.

Our Google Ads budget calculator can help turn CPC and conversion assumptions into a first-pass media plan.

A clearly labelled hypothetical example

Hypothetical example only: imagine a dealership wants 30 qualified used-car enquiries in a month. If it assumes a 6% landing-page conversion rate and an average CPC of £2.40 based on current planning data, it would need roughly 500 clicks. That produces an estimated media budget of £1,200.

That is not an automotive benchmark. Change the CPC, conversion rate or lead target and the required budget changes immediately. More importantly, if only a small proportion of those 30 enquiries are commercially viable, the campaign still needs work even if the cost per form looks attractive.

Work backwards from allowable acquisition cost

Budget planning becomes much more useful when marketing data connects to the economics of the sale. For vehicle campaigns, consider:

  • average front-end and back-end gross profit by vehicle type;
  • lead-to-appointment rate;
  • appointment-to-sale rate;
  • finance penetration where relevant;
  • stock age and the commercial urgency of moving specific vehicles;
  • the maximum acquisition cost the business can support.

For aftersales, use the value of the service relationship rather than just the first booking. A profitable service customer may return several times, whereas a low-margin one-off job can support much less acquisition cost.

Split the budget by commercial intent

One large “automotive” campaign usually hides where the money is going. Separate materially different intentions so budget and performance can be judged properly.

Campaign areaTypical intentPrimary outcome
Used vehicle stockMake/model, price, age, fuel type, local inventoryQualified vehicle enquiry or test drive
New vehiclesModel, offer, finance or launch searchesEnquiry, test drive or configured lead
AftersalesServicing, MOT, repair, tyres, manufacturer-specific serviceBooked appointment
BrandDealer or automotive brand nameProtect and convert existing demand
Fleet / B2BBusiness leasing, fleet, contract or specialist requirementsQualified business enquiry

Different groups can tolerate different acquisition costs. They may also need different landing pages, bidding strategies and geographical coverage.

Inventory quality can matter more than bid changes

For dealerships, paid media is connected to stock quality. Advertising cannot compensate indefinitely for stale vehicle data, weak photography, missing pricing, poor vehicle detail pages or cars that are no longer available.

Before increasing spend, check:

  • stock feeds are accurate and refreshed;
  • vehicle detail pages load quickly on mobile;
  • price, mileage, specification and finance information are clear;
  • enquiry and call actions are easy to use;
  • sold vehicles are handled correctly;
  • tracking works across calls, forms and booking actions.

If the website is part of the problem, our automotive web design work focuses on the vehicle journey as well as the visual design.

Where Vehicle Ads fit

Google Vehicle Ads can put eligible inventory directly in front of people searching for vehicles, using feed data such as make, model, price and mileage before the click. In the UK, availability and onboarding requirements can change, so dealers should check Google’s current Vehicle Ads guidance before planning around the format.

Vehicle Ads do not remove the need for clean inventory data or strong vehicle detail pages. They make those foundations more important because the ad experience is built around the stock feed.

Do not let daily budget hide weak targeting

A campaign can spend its full budget every day and still be poor. Review the search terms actually consuming spend. Automotive accounts often leak money into research, jobs, manuals, parts queries, insurance intent, private-sale intent or geographies the business does not serve.

Negative keywords should be based on your real search-term data rather than copied from a generic list. A phrase irrelevant to one dealer may be commercially important to another.

Track the path from click to sale

The strongest automotive PPC reporting connects media spend to downstream outcomes. At minimum, separate:

  • raw enquiries;
  • qualified enquiries;
  • appointments or test drives;
  • sales or booked work;
  • revenue or gross-profit contribution where your systems allow it.

Where possible, feed qualified and offline outcomes back into your advertising and reporting systems. Otherwise automated bidding can learn to find more cheap form fills instead of more buyers.

When to increase the budget

Increase spend when the account is losing profitable demand because of budget constraints and the additional volume still fits your stock, sales capacity and acquisition economics. Do not scale simply because CTR is high or the platform recommends a larger budget.

Likewise, reducing spend is sensible when lead quality deteriorates, stock is too thin, tracking is unreliable or the landing page is preventing useful traffic from converting.

Common automotive Google Ads budgeting mistakes

  • Choosing a budget before defining a conversion. The account then optimises around activity rather than value.
  • Using an industry-average CPC as the entire model. Your geography and query set matter more than a generic benchmark.
  • Mixing new cars, used stock and aftersales. Different economics disappear inside one blended CPA.
  • Ignoring the website. More media spend cannot fix weak inventory pages forever.
  • Reporting leads without quality. Sales teams quickly lose trust in marketing when poor forms are counted as wins.
  • Scaling before attribution works. More spend magnifies tracking problems as well as good performance.
  1. Define the qualified commercial outcome.
  2. Estimate the maximum acquisition cost from your own margin and close-rate data.
  3. Build the actual keyword and inventory scope you intend to advertise.
  4. Pull current CPC estimates for the target geography.
  5. Use historical conversion rates or a clearly labelled test assumption.
  6. Calculate the media required for the target conversion volume.
  7. Separate vehicle sales, aftersales, brand and B2B intent.
  8. Fix inventory feeds, landing pages and conversion tracking.
  9. Review search terms and lead quality weekly during the test period.
  10. Scale only when additional spend still produces acceptable commercial outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Google Ads budget for a car dealership?

There is no dependable universal figure. A useful budget is one large enough to generate a meaningful sample of the searches and qualified outcomes you care about, while remaining inside an acquisition cost the dealership can support.

Should used cars and servicing share one budget?

Usually not. Vehicle sales and aftersales have different search intent, landing pages, margins and conversion actions. Separating them makes budget control and reporting much clearer.

Should automotive advertisers optimise for leads or sales?

Use the deepest reliable signal your data supports. If sales attribution is accurate, it is more commercially useful than raw forms. If it is not, optimise around genuinely qualified leads or appointments until the offline data layer is dependable.
