Local SEO and trade directories can both create demand for home service businesses, but they give you different levels of control and different lead economics.
What local SEO gives you
Local SEO builds visibility you largely control through your website, Google Business Profile, genuine service-area pages and reviews. It is especially useful when customers repeatedly search for a service in a specific location.
What directories can add
Platforms such as trade directories can provide another source of discovery and trust. Their value depends on the actual lead quality, competition, commercial model and how many enquiries turn into profitable work. Being listed is not automatically an SEO or sales advantage.
Use both selectively
- keep business and service-area information accurate;
- prioritise platforms used by customers for your type of work;
- track each directory separately;
- compare qualified enquiries, booked jobs and completed jobs;
- avoid paying for volume that repeatedly produces unsuitable leads.
The best mix depends on local competition and job economics. For the owned-search side, use our home services SEO checklist.
